Armenia is the best by the results of implementation of the program of the fund “Millennium Challenge”

Armenia is the best by the results of implementation of the program “Millennium Challenge” among 25 countries, said Vice-President of “Millennium Challenge” on implementation issues Peter Fine during the meeting with the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, press-service of President’s Office informs.

“Mr. President, I am happy to meet with You at the complettion of such an initiative. I am pleased by its results. This is my visit to Armenia and I am very impressed. I am traveling a lot in the world and I can see a country which is developing dynamically and in a right direction”, said Fine.

Implementation of five-year program “Millennium Challenge-Armenia” officially ended at late September 2011.
The parties emphasized the importance of implementing the program “Millennium Challenge-Armenia” in the past five years, which was aimed at improving the living standards of the beneficiaries of the program – inhabitants of many rural communities of Armenia, through restoration of irrigation infrastructure development and solution of other vital tasks.

The President mentioned that in the beginning of the year he had an opportunity to speak about the program at a meeting with Executive Director of the Fund Daniel Yohannes, during which both sides highlighted the effectiveness of the program.

Sargysan said that Armenia intends to comprehensively develop mutual relations and continue effective cooperation with the U.S.

Significant work was done in the frames of the program “Millennium Challenge”, but there is a lot to do for the development of rural areas. We should continue our efforts in this direction.

During the meeting the parties discussed the reforms implemented in Armenia.

In 2006 the Corporation “Millennium Challenge” and the Government of Armenia signed an agreement targeted at the reduction of rural poverty through stable economic growth in agriculture. By the time of the formal completion of the program in the frames of the grant of corporation “Millennium Challenge-Armenia” investments were about $177 million.

The goal of the program “Millennium Challenge-Armenia” is the reduction of rural poverty through rehabilitation of irrigation infrastructures in Armenia, as well as provision of financial support and consultations to the farmers, representatives of processing companies and structures of irrigation management system. --0--
